Creating Project Moodboards | The Creative Process

Creating Project Moodboards | The Creative Process

There is something magical about moodboards. For me, when they come together,  it is like we’ve crossed the finish line and can see the project coming together. Pulling the different pieces, colors, and textures is so much fun. It is, hands down, one of my favorite creative avenues.  Creating project moodboards is crucial; it is the framework for the project.  I take this time to pull all the fabric, stone, tile, wood species, finishes, paint, lighting, hardware, and all other essential elements needed to style and complete a space.

Moodboards are not just compilations of pretty pictures or random objects; they are the initial step in translating abstract ideas into a concrete vision. They serve as a visual roadmap, ensuring the team and the clients are all on the same page moving forward. From color schemes to materials and patterns, moodboards encapsulate the essence of a project design concept.

Creating Project Moodboards

While it might seem like it all comes together at once, it doesn’t. It is often a step-by-step process. During my creative process, you will usually find me with a coffee in hand and music on in the background, as I begin pulling materials I have sourced for the project, as well as from my material library. This creative process is my love language for a project. I love designing moodboards so much and it's a somewhat meditative and inspiring phase.

While the moodboard I create defines the project, it also allows me to get a sense of the end result. This grants me a chance to make edits, additions, or subtractions wherever needed to make sure the entire design is cohesive, functional, and pleasing to the eyes. Each item, texture, or color choice is a carefully selected piece of the puzzle, contributing to the overall aesthetic and feel of the space.

One main reason for mood boards is to see if the materials selected are working together. The colors and materials set the tone for the space/s we are about to construct. When it comes to creative design, it’s hard to explain how you know when you're done - You just know when you’ve got it, and similarly, when something still feels off and needs tweaking.

Designing moodboards is a delicate dance between artistic expression and function. It's a process that bridges imagination and reality, transforming ideas into a visual that propels a project forward. In the world of interior design, where every detail matters, the art of designing moodboards is a necessity that brings the project to life and communicates that vision to everyone involved.
