How to Select the Perfect White Paint for Your Home

One of the most frequently asked questions I receive is about how to select the perfect white paint color. Choosing the right paint color, let alone white paint, can be a daunting task as the options seem endless. However, I have a few tips to guide you through the process of selecting the perfect white paint for your home, taking into consideration factors such as lighting, existing furniture, and personal preference.  Even in my own home, I am often asked which paint color we used, and while I love our Simply White walls by Sherwin Williams, it might not be the ideal white for your space.

Understand the Impact of Lighting and Surroundings

White paint is incredibly versatile, but it can be influenced by its surroundings, as it absorbs any nearby colors. Colors from furniture or natural light from your windows can cast undertones on your chosen white paint. For instance, a blue rug may introduce a subtle blue undertone, while a tan sofa might add a brown undertone. Therefore, what looks good in your friends’ or neighbors' homes might not work or look the same in your space.

To figure out which white is best for your space, observe how different whites interact with the light throughout the day by requesting sample sheets from various paint brands and hanging them in different rooms.  I suggest requesting paint samples from Dunn Edwards, Farrol and Ball, Sherwin Williams, and Benjamin Moore, all of which are amazing, trusted paint brands.

Test and Observe

Narrow down your paint selections to a couple colors that catch your eye. Then, purchase sample paint in those colors and paint sections in several rooms, applying at least two coats of paint after first priming the walls to remove any undertones that could affect the color. Take note of how the colors transform under different lighting conditions and in various parts of your home. This testing phase allows you to see how the white paint interacts with the unique characteristics of your space, ensuring you make the right choice.

Follow Your Gut

While there are popular white paint choices, it's important to remember that every home is different. Don't overthink the process—ultimately, the right white paint for your home is the one that evokes the desired ambiance and matches your vision. If a particular color makes you feel the vibe you're trying to achieve, it's likely the right choice.

Trust your instincts and keep experimenting until you find the perfect white for your space!

Recommended White Paints

While it's difficult to name the top five white paints due to the individual nature of each home, I can share a few of my go-to choices:

Remember, these are just starting points, and it's essential to test the colors in your specific space to see how they interact with your surroundings.

Cabinetry Considerations

When it comes to white cabinetry, the same rules don't necessarily apply. Stay tuned for a future post on how to select the perfect white paint for cabinets! However, here is one tip I am happy to share:

I usually create contrast between the cabinets and walls, and do not select the same paint color. However, if you prefer a seamless look, using the same white paint for both cabinets and walls can create a cohesive aesthetic. For a touch of contrast, consider selecting a smoother white for the cabinets and a warmer white for the walls.

Selecting the perfect white paint for your home is a personal and exciting journey. By testing colors and taking into consideration individual preferences, you can confidently choose a white paint that enhances the beauty of your space and achieves your desired look.
