The Art of Selecting Cabinet Hardware | The Jewelry of The Space

When it comes to designing a space, every detail matters, including the cabinet hardware. Often referred to as the jewelry of the space, hardware adds the finishing touch that pulls the entire room together. However, if you’ve ever looked at hardware options, you’ll quickly realize that there are an endless amount of options from sizes, styles, and colors.  The art of selecting cabinet hardware is probably more in depth than you realized. Below are a few things to consider when making your hardware selection in order to help you achieve a balanced, functional design that flows naturally with your style.

Design Style and Personal Touch

Choosing the right cabinet hardware starts with understanding the design style of your space. Whether your style leans towards modern, traditional, industrial, or elegant, selecting hardware that complements the overall aesthetic is crucial. However, don't be afraid to have fun and make a statement with unique hardware choices. Let the hardware tell a story and add a touch of your personality to the space.

Selecting the appropriate finish for your cabinet hardware is also vital in achieving a cohesive and harmonious look. The finish should complement the design style and color scheme of the space. Whether it's brushed nickel, polished brass, or matte black, the right finish can enhance the overall look and tie all the elements together for an elevated aesthetic.

Consider Functionality and Usage

While the visual appeal of hardware is important, functionality should not be overlooked. Functionality should be a priority, ensuring that the hardware is easy to grasp and operate. Think about how often you touch and open the cabinets in your home. It's essential to choose hardware that feels good in your hand and offers a comfortable grip. Test the hardware before making a final decision to ensure it provides a seamless and enjoyable user experience. If you make your selection based on appearance alone, you might later find that there are sharp edges that hurt when you brush up against them, or ridges that make it uncomfortable or hard to grip.

Determining the Right Size

To follow the last point, it is also important to consider the size of the cabinet or drawer in relation to the hardware. If you don’t have the renderings, each drawer and cabinet should be measured carefully to determine the right size knob or pull. Avoid choosing hardware that is too short or too long for the specific drawer or cabinet. Additionally, consider balance and proportion. Evaluate each elevation and ensure that the hardware balances with the entire design, especially when incorporating a combination of knobs and pulls.

For instance, appliance pulls are larger because the unit is heavier. These pulls are usually at least half or three-fourths the width. However, when selecting a basic pull for a cabinet, it is typically based on one-third of the drawer width/length. Selecting the right size and style is a science believe it or not. Hardware that is too long will look heavy, but if you go too small it will look weak and disproportional. It takes many reviews and meetings to strike the right balance and get the design perfect.

Creating Visual Interest

To add visual interest and break up the heaviness of pulls, consider incorporating knobs in strategic areas such as under sinks or on top drawers. By mixing and matching different hardware styles, you can create a personalized and dynamic look, while still maintaining cohesion by ensuring that the hardware pieces complement each other and contribute to the overall design style.

Proper Installation and Attention to Detail

I’ll  be honest, one of my biggest pet peeves with cabinet hardware is when it's not centered on the cabinet drawer. Proper installation is key to achieving a polished and professional look. Take the time to measure and mark the precise placement of hardware before installation. Attention to detail in this aspect will enhance the overall aesthetic of the finished space and ensure a visually pleasing result.

Selecting cabinet hardware is an art that combines style, functionality, and attention to detail. As the jewelry of the space, hardware completes the look and adds a touch of personality to your cabinets. Consider your design style, usage, appropriate finishes, and size when making your hardware choices. By carefully selecting cabinet hardware, you can elevate your space and create a captivating design that you will admire and enjoy for years to come.
